Termite Swarm Season

Termites cause more than $5 billion in damage in the United States every year and can get into any home – brick, stucco, wood, or even homes built on a concrete slab. Even worse, homeowner’s insurance typically does not protect against termite damage.
They are “silent destroyers” because they can chew through the wood in your home for many years before they are ever detected.
Early spring is typically when areas in the South experience what we refer to as Subterranean termite swarm season. So as you set out to take care of home wood_02subswarmer_enlrenovations or begin your spring cleaning, be sure to check for signs of termite infestation. Here are a few areas you should inspect if you think you may have a problem:

  • Check around windows and doors. If you find discarded insect wings in your home, it’s a possible sign you have an infestation.
  • Look for mud tubes along the foundation of your home. Termites prefer dark, moist conditions, so they construct mud tubes from the earth as they make their way into the interior of your home. Once they gain access, they eat away at the structural composition of your house.
  • Look for small holes in drywall. When reproductive termites swarm, they often create exit holes normally 6 to 8 feet from the ground. As they emerge from the exit holes, they fly toward light sources such as windows or skylights. You may also see dirt around the exit holes.
  • Finally, if you notice any soft spots in your molding and trim, baseboards or window sills, it’s a good possibility Subterranean termites have invaded your home.

If you suspect you may have a Subterranean termites infestation in your home or just want to protect your home from the threat of termites, call a professional! Massey Services will conduct a thorough termite inspection at no charge and provide you with a detailed report of their findings. They will also recommend a protection plan that’s right for your home.
